Market Commentary for December 13, 2007


At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the session: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) posted a gain of 44.06 points on the day to end the session at 13,517.96; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) posted a loss of 57.36 points to end the session at 9,864.28; the NASDAQ posted a loss of 2.65 points for a close at 2,668.49; the S&P 500 moved higher by 1.82 points to end at 1,488.41 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved lower by 2.25 points to close at 769.46. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the world’s investable market capitalization) posted a loss of 3.82 points to close at 265.60 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 posted a gain of 5.40 points to close at 6,062.77.

On the NYSE today, advancers came in at 1,034; decliners totaled 2,160; unchanged came in at 73; new highs came in at 27 and new lows came in at 154.

Momentum stocks traded by active day traders on the NYSE today: Lehman Brothers Holdings Incorporated (LEH) shed 0.45 points with a high on the day of $62.88, a low of $58.50 for a closing price at $61.37; CME Group Incorporated (CME) gained 12.83 points with a high on the day of $703.00, a low of $688.17 for a closing price at $701.00; Petroleo Brasileiro (PBR) shed 1.38 points with a high on the day of $111.21, a low of $107.46 for a closing price at $110.59; iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index (FXI) shed 6.98 points with a high on the day of $178.06, a low of $173.69 for a closing price at $176.53; China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SNP) shed 9.19 points with a high on the day of $148.88, a low of $144.00 for a closing price at $146.21; MasterCard Incorporated (MA) gained 9.30 points with a high on the day of $224.88 a low of $211.22 for a closing price at $223.20 and Modine Manufacturing Corporation (MOD) shed 3.39 points with a high on the day of $19.99, a low of $15.84 for a closing price at $16.91.

On the NASDAQ today, advanced totaled 1,195; decliners totaled 1,792; unchanged came in at 135; new highs came in at 29 and new lows came in at 171.

U.S. November Retail & Food Sales Excluding Autos rose 1.8%; U.S. November Retail & Food Sales rose 1.2% versus consensus of an increase by 0.6%; U.S. November Passenger Car Prices rose 0.6%; U.S. PPI For Energy, Gasoline Post Record Gains; U.S. November PPI Increase Fastest Since August 1973; U.S. October PPI Unrevised at an increase by 0.1%; U.S. November PPI Energy Prices rose 14.1%; U.S. November PPI Crude Goods rose 8.7%; U.S. November PPI Crude Goods Core fell 0.5%; U.S. November PPI Intermediate Goods rose 3.7%; U.S. November PPI Intermediate Goods Core rose 1.0%; U.S. November PPI Excluding Food & Energy rose 0.4% versus consensus of an increase by 0.2%; U.S. November Producer Prices rose 3.2% versus consensus of an increase by 1.7% and October Retail & Food Sales was left unrevised at an increase by 0.2%.

Commodities Markets
The trend was lower across the board today for the Energy Sector: Light crude moved lower today by $2.14 to close at $92.25 a barrel; Heating Oil moved lower today by $0.03 to close at $2.61 a gallon; Natural Gas moved lower today by $0.16 to close at $7.34 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas moved lower today by $0.04 to close at $2.37 a gallon.

Metals Market ended the session lower across the board today: Gold moved sharply lower today by $14.80 to close at $804.00 a Troy ounce; Silver moved lower by $0.59 today to close at $14.24 per Troy ounce; Platinum moved lower today by $8.20 to close at $1,471.60 per Troy ounce and Copper moved lower by $0.07 today to close at $2.96 per pound.

On the Livestock and Meat Markets, the trend was mostly lower across the board today: Lean Hogs ended the day lower by $0.33 to close at $61.75; Pork Bellies ended the day higher by $0.38 at $90.05; Live Cattle ended the day lower by $1.63 at $95.18 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by $1.40 at $105.75.

Other Commodities: Corn ended the day higher by $1.75 at $435.00 and Soybeans moved lower today by $5.50 to end the session at $1,146.00.

Bonds were lower across the board today: 2 year bond moved lower by 5/32 at 99 26/32; 5 year bond moved lower by 12/32 at 99 6/32 today; 10 year bond moved lower by 24/32 at 100 16/32 and the 30 year bond moved lower by 1 16/32 at 105 25/32 for the day.

The e-mini Dow ended the session today at 13,611 with a gain of 27 points on the trading session. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 273,412 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 5,634,370; Open Interest for Futures moved lower by 21,934 points to close at 9,695,919; the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 87,750 points to close at 6,850,135 and the Cleared Only closed lower by 45 points to close at 16,457 for a total Open Interest on the day of 16,562,511 for a total Change on the day with a gain of 65,771 points.
