Market Commentary for January 2, 2008


At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the session: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) posted a triple digit loss of 220.86 points on the day to end the session at 13,043.96; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) posted a loss of 92.82 points to end the session at 9,647.50; the NASDAQ posted a loss of 42.65 points for a close at 2,609.63; the S&P 500 moved lower by 21.20 points to end at 1,447.16 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved lower by 12.48 points to close at 753.55. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the world�s investable market capitalization) posted a loss of 1.64 points to close at 261.76 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 posted a loss of 86.55 points to close at 5,877.19.

On the NYSE today, advancers came in at 1,393; decliners totaled 1,784; unchanged came in at 74; new highs came in at 47 and new lows came in at 192. Momentum stocks traded by active day traders on the NYSE today: LDK Solar Corporation Limited (LDK) gained 2.36 points with a high on the day of $51.60, a low of $48.22 for a closing price at $49.37; Mastercard Incorporated (MA) shed 0.52 points with a high on the day of $220.29, a low of $212.60 for a closing price at $214.68; CME Group Incorporated (CME) shed 12.01 points with a high on the day of $686.43, a low of $670.55 for a closing price at $673.99; Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. U.S. Institute for Supply Management December Inventories Index came in at 45.5 versus November reading at 46.9; U.S. Institute for Supply Management December Production Index came in at 47.3 versus November reading at 51.9; U.S. Institute for Supply Management December New Orders Index came in at 45.7 versus November reading at 52.6; U.S. Institute for Supply Management December Employment Index came in at 48.0 versus November reading at 47.8; U.S. Institute for Supply Management December Prices Index came in at 68.0 versus November reading at 67.5; U.S. Institute for Supply Management December Manufacturing Business Index came in at 47.7 versus November reading at 50.8; U.S. Institute for Supply Management December Manufacturing Business Index Expected at 51.0 and U.S. Institute for Supply Management December Manufacturing Business Index came in at 47.7.

U.S. Construction Spending increased by 0.1% in November compared to consensus of a decrease by 0.4% and October Construction Spending was revised to a decrease by 0.4% from a decrease by 0.8%.

Commodities Markets
The trend was higher across the board today for the Energy Sector: Light crude moved higher today by $3.62 to close at $100.00 a barrel; Heating Oil moved higher today by $0.11 to close at $2.74 a gallon; Natural Gas moved higher today by $0.45 to close at $7.87 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas moved higher today by $0.09 to close at $2.57 a gallon.

Metals Market ended the session higher across the board today: Gold soared higher today by $22.00 to close at $860.00 a Troy ounce; Silver moved higher today by $0.37 to close at $15.29 per Troy ounce; Platinum moved higher today by $6.50 to close at $1,546.00 per Troy ounce and Copper moved higher today by $0.02 to close at $3.06 per pound.

On the Livestock and Meat Markets, the trend was mostly lower across the board today: Lean Hogs ended the day lower by $0.70 to close at $57.18; Pork Bellies ended the day lower by $0.18 at $85.80; Live Cattle ended the day higher by $0.08 at $96.25 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by $0.60 at $106.50.

Other Commodities: Corn ended the day higher by $7.00 at $462.50 and Soybeans moved sharply higher today by $34.50 to end the session at $1,248.75.

Bonds were higher across the board today: 2 year bond moved higher by 10/32 to close at 100 22/32; 5 year bond moved higher by 27/32 to close at 101 17/32 today; 10 year bond moved higher by 1 to close at 102 24/32 and the 30 year bond moved higher by 1 21/32 to close at 110 21/32 on the day.

The e-mini Dow ended the session today at 13,140 with a gain of 192 points on the trading session. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 54,617 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 1,145,662; Open Interest for Futures moved higher by 12,568 points to close at 9,341,341; the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 25,853 points to close at 6,500,512 and the Cleared Only closed lower by 170 points to close at 20,212 for a total Open Interest on the day of 15,862,065 for a total Change on the day with a gain of 38,251 points.
