problem may be another program or hardware device (ipod) conflicting with your mic in mumble.
I had Skype running, I'll try to configure it now.

It wasn't Skype.
I'm running VMWare on a Mac which could be the problem.
Anyone else doing this ?
BTW, I can hear but not talk.
