Definition of 'Challenger Job-Cut Report'

During the first week of the month Challenger, Gray & Christmas issue their job-cut report for the previous month. January's data is release in the first week of February.

Data is colated from from state departments of labor which collects announcements of corporate layoffs. These announcements are the types of announcements that you will read about in the papers and see on TV that say things such as "Company XYZ will be laying off 2,000 employees." There is no information about how these layoffs will take place. They could, for example be immediate or happen in a year's time or could be handled through attrition.

This report is similar to the weekly jobless claims report, however, it also provides information about the state and the industries where the layoffs are happening.
