Definition of 'Back Months'

In futures or options trading the back months are any months beyond the current month that is being traded. Compare this to the near month which is the currently traded month.

For example, if you are trading the S&P500 Index Futures and today's date is the 15 February then the current contract that you would be trading is the March contract. That would make the June, September, December and following year's March months the back months for that contract.
