Definition of 'Quarterly Services Survey'

In the second week of the last month of each quarter the Quarterly Services Survey is release. The released data refers to the prior quarter. Q1's data is release in the second week of June. The Bureau of the Census at the United States Department of Commerce is responsible for this data.

The Quarterly Services Survey provides estimates of total operating revenue and the percentage of revenue by class of customer for the following three NAICS sectors:
  • 51 - Information
  • 54 - Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
  • 56 - Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services
The publication of this report started in September 2004 and is focused on the service sector which, according to the Census Bureau, accounts for around 55% of United States' economic activity.
