Market Commentary for September 25, 2007


Trading activity was mixed during the session with most of the negative activity occurring at the opening bell. We saw the major indices surge higher into the close. Trading volume was moderate amidst mild trading ranges.

At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the session: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) posted a gain of 22.44 points on the day to end the session at 13,781.50; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) posted a loss of 12.60 points to end the session at 9,933.82; the NASDAQ posted a gain of 15.50 points for a close at 2,683.45; the S&P 500 moved lower with a loss of 0.06 points to end at 1,517.67 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved lower by 2.51 points to close at 803.29. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the world’s investable market capitalization) posted a loss of 1.30 points to close at 264.11 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 posted a loss of 21.56 points to close at 6,220.96.

Commodities Markets
The trend was lower across the board today for the Energy Sector: Light crude moved lower today by $1.42 to close at $79.53 a barrel; Heating Oil moved lower today by $0.04 to close at $2.21 a gallon; Natural Gas moved lower today by $0.08 to close at $7.09 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas moved lower today by $0.05 to close at $2.04 a gallon.

Metals Market ended the session mostly lower across the board today: Gold moved lower today by $0.50 to close at $738.80 an ounce; Silver moved lower by $0.02 to close at $13.62 per ounce; Platinum moved higher today by $5.20 to close at $1,349.40 an ounce and Copper closed lower by $0.02 at $3.63 per pound.

On the Livestock and Meat Markets, the trend was mostly lower across the board today: Lean Hogs ended the day lower by $1.03 to close at $62.30; Pork Bellies ended the day higher by $1.23 at $88.73; Live Cattle ended the day lower by $0.28 at $100.50 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by $0.23 at $116.38.

Other Commodities: Corn moved lower on the day to post a loss of $1.75 at $371.75 and Soybeans moved lower today with a loss of $5.75 points to end the session at $973.00.

The e-mini Dow ended the session today at 13,872 with a gain of 10 points on the trading session. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 135,883 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. Bonds were mostly higher across the board today: 2 year bond closed higher by 3/32 at 100; 5 year bond closed higher by 6/32 at 99 12/32; 10 year bond moved higher by 2/32 again today to close at 100 31/32 and the 30 year bond moved lower by 8/32 to close at 101 18/32 for the day.

The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 2,537,421; Open Interest for Futures moved higher by 40,879 points to close at 8,870,375; the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 120,986 points to close at 7,395,709 and the Cleared Only closed higher by 219 points at 8,545 for a total Open Interest on the day of 16,274,629 with a total Change on the day with a gain of 162,084 points.

On the NYSE today, advancers came in at 1,301; decliners totaled 1,901; unchanged came in at 92; new highs came in at 88 and new lows came in at 99. Gainers and losers for the day as well as active day trading stocks on the NYSE:

Intercontinental Exchange Incorporated (ICE) rallied higher on the session to post a nice gain on the day of 9.34 points with a high of $152.15, a low of $145.90 for a close at $151.15; CME Group Incorporated (CME) rallied higher on the trading day to post a nice gain on the Big Board of 12.31 points with a high on the trading session of $553.45, a low of $545.01 for a final trading price at $552.41; Rio Tinto plc (RTP) moved sharply lower on the trading session to post a loss of 10.04 points with a high on the day of $333.06, a low of $327.67 with a closing price of $332.80; China Southern Airlines Company Limited (ZNH) posted a gain on the session of 4.10 points with a high on the day of $85.39, a low of $74.00 for a closing price on the day of $84.16; China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited (CEA) moved strongly lower again on the day for a loss of 10.30 points with a high on the trading session of $99.33, a low of $90.00 for a final trading price of $97.70; PetroChina Company Limited (PTR) shed 5.30 points on the day with a high of $176.98, a low of $172.79 with a closing price of $175.82 and LDK Solar Company Limited (LDK) bolted higher on the session to post a gain of 4.83 points with a high of 70.64, a low of $61.76 to close at $70.02.

On the NASDAQ today, advanced totaled 1,325; decliners totaled 1,677; unchanged came in at 128; new highs came in at 64 and new lows came in at 88. Gainers and losers for the day as well as, active day trading stocks on the NASDAQ: Apple Incorporated (AAPL) provided nice trading action for active day traders again today with a high of $153.22, a low of $146.82 for a gain of 5.30 points with a closing price of $153.55; Superconductor Technologies Incorporated (SCON) roared higher on the session to post a whopping gain of 61.46% to tack on 3.62 points for a final trading price of $9.51; Focus Media Holding Limited (FMCN) rallied higher on the session with a gain of 21.18% to climb higher by 10.27 points for a closing price of $58.77 and McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurants Incorporated (MSSR) moved sharply lower on the session with a heavy loss of 22.91% to shed 5.74 points for a closing price of $19.32.
