Market Commentary for December 18, 2007


At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the session: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) posted a gain of 65.27 points on the day to end the session at 13,232.47; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) posted a gain of 73.88 points to end the session at 9,602.22; the NASDAQ posted a gain of 21.57 points for a close at 2,596.03; the S&P 500 moved higher by 9.08 points to end at 1,454.98 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved higher by 15.00 points to close at 754.06. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the world’s investable market capitalization) posted a gain of 0.76 points to close at 257.68 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 posted a gain of 39.92 points to close at 5,930.33.

On the NYSE today, advancers came in at 1,936; decliners totaled 1,258; unchanged came in at 103; new highs came in at 45 and new lows came in at 387.

U.S. November Housing Starts fell 3.7% to 1.187 Million compared to consensus of a drop by 5.7%; Building Permits fell 1.5% to 1.152 Million Rate in November and October Housing Starts were revised to an increase by 4.2% from an increase by 3.0%. Fed to Consider Curbs on Mortgage Products, Disclosures; Fed Staff Recommends Limits on Prepayment Penalties and Fed Staff Proposes Curbs On Compensation of Mortgage Brokers.

Commodities Markets
The trend was mostly lower across the board today for the Energy Sector: Light crude moved lower today by $0.14 to close at $90.49 a barrel; Heating Oil moved lower today by $0.04 to close at $2.55 a gallon; Natural Gas moved higher today by $0.11 to close at $7.32 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas moved lower today by $0.03 to close at $2.30 a gallon.

Metals Market ended the session mostly higher across the board today: Gold moved higher today by $8.10 to close at $807.40 a Troy ounce; Silver moved higher today by $0.19 to close at $14.17 per Troy ounce; Platinum moved sharply higher today by $11.70 to close at $1,515.30 per Troy ounce and Copper moved lower today by $0.01 to close at $2.88 per pound.

On the Livestock and Meat Markets, the trend was mostly higher across the board today: Lean Hogs ended the day higher by $0.58 to close at $59.83; Pork Bellies ended the day lower by $0.13 at $88.05; Live Cattle ended the day higher by $1.05 at $96.68 and Feeder Cattle ended the day higher by $1.75 at $108.08.

Other Commodities: Corn ended the day lower by $6.67 at $432.00 and Soybeans moved lower today by $7.50 to end the session at $1,168.50.

Bonds were mixed across the board today: 2 year bond moved lower by 2/32 at 99 27/32; 5 year bond closed at 99 11/32 today; 10 year bond moved higher by 4/32 at 101 and the 30 year bond moved higher by 20/32 at 107 13/32 for the day.

The e-mini Dow ended the session today at 13,318 with a gain of 49 points on the trading session. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 222,140 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 2,868,643; Open Interest for Futures moved lower by 16,009 points to close at 9,661,330; the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 60,641 points to close at 7,293,209 and the Cleared Only closed higher by 183 points to close at 18,222 for a total Open Interest on the day of 16,972,761 for a total Change on the day with a gain of 44,815 points.
