Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a forum for 21 Pacific Rim countries that promotes free trade and economic cooperation. It was established in 1989 and is headquartered in Singapore.
APEC's goals are to:
- Increase economic growth, trade, and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Strengthen economic and technical cooperation among member economies.
- Promote sustainable development.
- Improve the living standards of the people of the Asia-Pacific region.
APEC is open to all economies in the Asia-Pacific region. Currently, its members include Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.
APEC meets at the Leaders' Summit level every year. The Leaders' Summit is the highest decision-making body of APEC. It is attended by the heads of state or government of all member economies.
APEC also has a number of other meetings and activities, including ministerial meetings, senior officials' meetings, and working groups. These meetings and activities are held throughout the year to discuss and develop policies and initiatives to promote economic growth and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
