Definition of 'Volume'

The number of contracts traded for each delivery month during a specified trading period.

The number of stocks traded during a given trading period.

The Volume figure is useful for tracking if there has been an unusually large amount of activity in a particular instrument.

Some instruments (like spot Forex) do not have volume figures available for them. In cases such as this, traders will sometimes use Ticks as a proxy.
