Definition of 'Green Card'

A Green Card is a document issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that grants the bearer permanent resident status in the United States. Green Cards are typically issued to individuals who have been offered employment in the United States, have invested in the US economy, or are the spouses or children of US citizens or permanent residents.

There are several different types of Green Cards, each with its own set of requirements. The most common type of Green Card is the employment-based Green Card, which is issued to individuals who have been offered a job in the United States by a US employer. To qualify for an employment-based Green Card, the individual must have a job offer that is in a field that is considered to be a shortage occupation in the United States. The individual must also have a bachelor's degree or higher, or have at least five years of experience in the field.

Another type of Green Card is the investment-based Green Card, which is issued to individuals who have invested a significant amount of money in the US economy. To qualify for an investment-based Green Card, the individual must invest at least $500,000 in a US business. The individual must also create at least 10 full-time jobs for US citizens or permanent residents.

Finally, there are Green Cards that are issued to the spouses and children of US citizens or permanent residents. Spouses and children of US citizens are eligible to apply for Green Cards immediately upon marriage to a US citizen. Children of US citizens are also eligible to apply for Green Cards if they are under the age of 21. Spouses and children of permanent residents must wait for at least three years before they are eligible to apply for Green Cards.

Green Cards are valid for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely. Green Card holders are eligible to work in the United States, attend school in the United States, and receive all the benefits of US citizenship, except for the right to vote.

Obtaining a Green Card can be a complex and time-consuming process. However, it can be a worthwhile investment for individuals who want to live and work permanently in the United States.
