Near Month

In futures or options trading the near month is the current month that is being traded which is the next month that is going to expire. Compare this to the back months which are the months after the near month.

For example, if you are trading the S&P500 Index Futures and today's date is the 15 February then the near month would be the March contract and the back months would be all the months after that.
