Definition of 'Kiting'

Kiting is a fraudulent practice in which a person writes a check from one bank account and then deposits it into another bank account before the check can be returned for insufficient funds. This creates the illusion that the person has more money in their account than they actually do.

Kiting can be used to artificially inflate a person's credit score or to obtain loans that they would not otherwise be eligible for. It can also be used to make payments on time, even if the person does not have the money to do so.

Kiting is a serious crime and can result in criminal charges, including fraud, forgery, and larceny. If you are caught kiting, you could be fined, imprisoned, or both.

There are a few things you can do to protect yourself from kiting. First, never write a check from an account that does not have enough money to cover it. Second, check your bank statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions. Third, if you suspect that someone is kiting your account, contact your bank immediately.
