After The Bell

After The Bell refers to the time period after the market closes. This usually refers to the stock market. The term comes from the NYSE which rings a bell to close its trading day.

Some companies make major announcements or release results After The Bell to give the market a chance to digest the news before trading in their stock recommences the following day. This is to prevent knee jerk reactions to the news which may cause their stock prices to become temporarily oversold or overbought.
