Definition of 'Swaption (Swap Option)'

A swaption is an option to enter into an interest rate swap contract. The buyer of a swaption pays for the right, but not the obligation, to enter into a specified swap agreement with the seller on a specified future date. Swaptions are typically OTC and not exchange traded derivatives.
