Definition of 'Vertical Well'
A vertical well is a type of oil or gas well that is drilled straight down into the earth. This type of well is typically used in areas where the oil or gas deposits are located near the surface. Vertical wells are relatively easy to drill and are less expensive than other types of wells, such as horizontal wells. However, vertical wells can only access a limited amount of oil or gas, as they are only able to reach the deposits that are located directly below the well.
Horizontal wells are drilled at an angle, rather than straight down. This allows them to access oil or gas deposits that are located further from the surface. Horizontal wells are more expensive to drill than vertical wells, but they can access a larger amount of oil or gas.
The type of well that is used in a particular area will depend on a number of factors, including the geology of the area, the depth of the oil or gas deposits, and the cost of drilling.
