Definition of 'Weak Form Efficiency'

Weak form efficiency is a type of market efficiency that states that the current price of a security already reflects all past information about the security. This means that there is no way to profit from trading on historical data, such as past prices or trading volume.

Weak form efficiency is one of the three main types of market efficiency, along with semi-strong form efficiency and strong form efficiency. Semi-strong form efficiency states that the current price of a security already reflects all publicly available information about the security, while strong form efficiency states that the current price of a security already reflects all information, both public and private.

Weak form efficiency is based on the idea that the market is efficient at processing information. This means that new information is quickly incorporated into the price of a security, and there is no way to profit from trading on information that is already known to the market.

There are a number of studies that have found evidence to support weak form efficiency. One study, by Eugene Fama and Kenneth French, found that stock prices do not follow a random walk, but instead exhibit some degree of predictability. This suggests that there may be some way to profit from trading on historical data, but the studies also found that the profits from such trading are small and difficult to achieve.

Another study, by Robert Shiller, found that stock prices are not very predictable over short time periods, but become more predictable over longer time periods. This suggests that the market is more efficient at processing information over longer time periods.

Overall, the evidence suggests that weak form efficiency is a valid concept, but that it is not perfect. There may be some way to profit from trading on historical data, but the profits are likely to be small and difficult to achieve.
