Fed Days

The most recent Fed Day

Fed Days are days when the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) make announcements on interest rates. These FOMC days usually see a low range and low volume day up to moment when the announcement is made and then the day changes into a volatile high volume afternoon. The FOMC change (or leave the same) the Fed Funds Rate. The announcement will be made at 2:30pm or 2:00pm depending on whether or not there is also a Fed Chairman Press Conference.

This is what the E-Mini S&P500 Market did after the last FOMC rate change announcement on 16 December 2015 when the FOMC raised the rate to the 0.25% to 0.5% range.

The next FOMC Meeting is 27 January 2016 (1st scheduled meeting of 2016).

The rest of this page shows E-mini S&P500 charts from this and previous years. We felt that the S&P 500 most accurately reflected the market's sentiment and reaction to the rate change (if any) and is considered the barometer of the market. For that reason we look at the S&P500 charts on Fed Days to see how the market moved and the associated volume with those moves.

This will be that last FOMC meeting for 2005. (If we have our facts correct then this will also be the last FOMC meeting over which Greenspan presides.)

The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to raise its target for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 4-1/4 percent.

Despite elevated energy prices and hurricane-related disruptions, the expansion in economic activity appears solid. Core inflation has stayed relatively low in recent months and longer-term inflation expectations remain contained. Nevertheless, possible increases in resource utilization as well as elevated energy prices have the potential to add to inflation pressures.

The Committee judges that some further measured policy firming is likely to be needed to keep the risks to the attainment of both sustainable economic growth and price stability roughly in balance. In any event, the Committee will respond to changes in economic prospects as needed to foster these objectives.
