Market Commentary for January 15, 2008


At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the session: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) posted a triple digit loss of 277.04 points on the day to end the session at 12,501.11; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) posted a triple digit loss of 267.17 points to end the session at 9,172.17; the NASDAQ posted a loss of 60.71 points for a close at 2,417.59; the S&P 500 posted a loss of 35.30 points for a close at 1,380.95 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved lower by 15.05 points to close at 697.43. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the world's investable market capitalization) posted a loss of 6.11 points to close at 248.27 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 posted a loss of 139.46 points to close at 5,592.44.

On the NYSE today, advancers came in at 783; decliners totaled 2,391; unchanged came in at 92; new highs came in at 24 and new lows came in at 324.

U.S. December Producer Prices fell 0.1% compared to consensus of an increase by 0.1%; U.S. December PPI Excluding-Food & Energy rose 0.2% compared to consensus of an increase by 0.1%; U.S. December PPI Intermediate Goods fell 0.2%; U.S. December PPI Core Intermediate Goods remained Unchanged; U.S. December PPI Crude Goods rose 1.0%; U.S. December PPI Core Crude Goods remained Unchanged; U.S. December PPI Energy Prices fell 1.9%; U.S. December Passenger Car Prices fell 0.9%; U.S. PPI rose 6.3% in 2007 which is highest Calendar-Year rise since 1981; U.S. November PPI remained unrevised at an increase by 3.2%; U.S. December Retail & Food Sales fell 0.4% compared to consensus of a drop by 0.1% and U.S. December Retail & Food Sales Excluding-Autos fell 0.4%.

New York Fed's January Manufacturing Index came in at 9.03 versus 9.80 in December; New York Fed January New Orders came in at0.04 versus 13.18 in December; New York Fed January Employment came in at2.44 versus 5.00 in December and New York Fed January Prices Received came in at18.29 versus 12.50 in December.

Redbook data released today: U.S. Retail Sales fell 0.1% for first week of January versus December.

Commodities Markets
The trend was lower across the board today for the Energy Sector: Light crude moved lower today by $2.30 to close at $91.9 a barrel; Heating Oil moved lower today by $0.04 to close at $2.53 a gallon; Natural Gas moved lower today by $0.14 to close at $8.13 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas moved lower today by $0.06 to close at $2.31 a gallon.

Metals Market ended the session mostly lower across the board today: Gold moved lower today by $0.90 to close at $902.50 a Troy ounce; Silver moved lower today by $0.13 to close at $16.30 per Troy ounce; Platinum moved higher today by $1.50 to close at $1,585.50 per Troy ounce and Copper moved lower by $0.10 today to close at $3.24 per pound.

On the Livestock and Meat Markets, the trend was mostly lower across the board today: Lean Hogs ended the day lower by $0.88 to close at $62.25; Pork Bellies ended the day higher by $0.03 at $84.65; Live Cattle ended the day lower by $0.90 at $94.30 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by $0.35 at $101.10.

Other Commodities: Corn ended the day lower today by $3.00 at $508.75 and Soybeans moved higher today by $5.00 to end the session at $1,301.00.

Bonds were higher across the board today: 2 year bond moved higher by 12/32 to close at 101 12/32; 5 year bond moved higher by 111/32 to close at 102 30/32 today; 10 year bond moved higher by 23/32 to close at 104 18/32 and the 30 year bond moved higher by 1 11/32 to close at 111 28/32 on the day.

The e-mini Dow ended the session today at 12,588 with a loss of 162103 points on the trading session. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 133,111 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 3,675,114; Open Interest for Futures moved higher by 36,364 points to close at 10,055,882; the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 221,362 points to close at 7,922,733 and the Cleared Only closed higher by 509 points to close at 21,762 for a total Open Interest on the day of 18,000,377 for a total Change on the day with a gain of 258,235 points.
